Carlisle boss looks for positives from County draw

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott was left searching for the positives after his side failed to break down a stern Stockport County defence who picked up their first point in 13 games.

Hatters goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams played a part in keeping County level, pulling off several good stops, including a stunning one in injury time to prevent Adam Clayton’s effort finding the back of the net.

“There are no easy games in this division and we have seen that again today. We’ve had to work very hard, but the positives are that we have seen plenty of team spirit,” Abbott said.

Both sides were reduced to ten men by referee Carl Sarginson, with Scott Dobie (pictured) seeing red for United after raising his arm to Michael Rose while County’s Jabo Ibehre picked up two yellow cards, and Abbott felt the officials had a poor afternoon.

“I think Gary [Ablett] would agree that the referee made a few poor decisions today. We can’t comment too much on the red cards because we have to see them again, but he has had a big influence on the game. However, we have to deal with it.”

He added: “Scott Dobie will now miss three games, and that’s not ideal at all, but we have to get on with it.”

Stockport County travel to Brunton Park today to face Carlisle United, with the Hatters hoping to end their miserable run of form which has seen them go pointless since early October.

United will be high on confidence after a superb victory over Leeds United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area Final in the week, but County will also feel they could take something from the game after a much improved performance against Swindon Town on Tuesday.

Quotes

Greg Abbott:

“We will have to be at our absolute best and I will be reminding the players that the plaudits from Tuesday night have gone now.

“Stockport have strengthened their side just before they play us and if any of our players think it’s going to be easy, they should be aware of that.

“They will be scrapping for their lives, like we have done in the past, and it will probably be a tougher game than it was at Leeds on Tuesday night.”

Gary Ablett:

“I am still positive, I still believe and I look forward to going to Carlisle and getting a positive result. I think it is a game we are more than capable of going up there and winning.

With the players we’ve brought in, our target of 12 wins is a real possibility and it’s something we’re going to work very hard to achieve.”

Team News

Carlisle could be boosted by the return of three players from injury. Skipper Paul Thirwell sat out their midweek win because of an achilles injury but should be fit enough to return. Former Hatters midfielder Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and striker Richard Offiong could also be in contention after recovering from knee injuries.

County are without winger David Poole who is still banned after being sent off against Leeds United at the end of December but otherwise Gary Ablett has a full squad to choose from.

Abbott expecting tough clash

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott has warned his players against complacency when they take on bottom of the table Stockport County at Brunton Park today.

The Cumbrians beat top of the table Leeds United 2-1 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in the week but Abbott says the Hatters match will be tougher with Gary Ablett’s side fighting for their lives.

“This will probably be the toughest game we have had for a while,” Abbott told the News & Star.
